Janet "Jan" Gurganus Dowdy, 54, and her husband, Michael Allen Dowdy of Burgaw died unexpectedly Sunday, October 10, 2010 in Pender County.

She was born February 10, 1956 in Wilmington, the daughter of the late Pender Gurganus and Geneva Batts Gurganus Smith.

Surviving are her son, Gary C. Lanier, Jr. of Rocky Point; her aunts, Arlene "Jackie" Price of Jacksonville, Patricia "Pat" Mobley of Surf City, Shelby Boone of Rose Hill, Gloria Raynor of Chinquapin, and Carolyn Nave of Spartanburg, SC; uncles, Horace Batts of Beulaville and Royce Batts of Raleigh; numerous cousins and friends who loved Jan and Mike dearly.

Jan graduated from Wallace-Rose Hill High School in the Class of 1974. She was a faithful member of Lighthouse Worship Center and dearly loved all of her church family.

Jan loved her family and was always there for them. Always a smile on her face, a kind word to greet you, and never meeting a stranger; she set a positive example with her unwavering commitment to live her life by God's Word. She took great pride and cherished her dogs and cats. She and Mike brought joy into the lives of so many and they will be lovingly remembered and forever missed.

Funeral service for Jan and Mike will be at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, October 14, 2010 at Lighthouse Worship Center, 7560 US Hwy 117 S, Rocky Point with The Rev. Jeff Daw officiating. Following the service the family will receive friends at the church until 8:00 p.m.

A graveside service for Jan and Mike will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Riverview Memorial Park. Casketbearers will be William Lawson, Wayne Tuell, Rae Horrell, Mark Price, Ricky Laughter and Paul Johnson.
