John M. Dixon, 70, of Penderlea died peacefully on Tuesday, March 1st, 2022, at Lower Cape Fear Life Care after a lengthy illness.

John had a 25-year career in law enforcement, retiring from the Pender County Sherriff's Office in 2008.

He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Cathy Short Dixon; two daughters, Tonya Record, and Morgan Burns (Donnie), and sons Adam Dixon (Amanda), and Brandon Decker (Heather). John also has his brother Paul Dixon (Janet), sister's Mary Lewis, and Beth Rudolph (Tom).  John adored his numerous grandchildren and was known affectionately as "Papa". John also leaves behind friends that he enjoyed spending time with; Buck Horrell, Randy Southerland, Joe Carr, Dave Pettit and Ernie Shorette.

Big John was a devoted husband and caring father, grandfather, brother and friend.  He enjoyed the simple things in life, but his greatest joy was his family. Being an avid outdoorsman, Big John enjoyed hunting, fishing, target shooting, and reloading. Big John will surely be missed but treasured memories of him will forever live in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Potts Presbyterian Church Cemetery.  Everyone is asked to dress casual.
