Obituary

John "Jay" Edwin Porter, Jr., a beloved husband, grandfather, brother, and uncle peacefully passed away Saturday, July 8, 2023 at the age of 78 in Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born on September 12, 1944, in Currie, the son of the late John Edwin Porter and Hildred Ramsey Porter.  He was also predeceased by his brother, Jeffrey Allen Porter.

Jay was a kind-hearted and compassionate man who touched the lives of many with his warmth and generosity. He was deeply devoted to his family and wife.

Jay is survived by his wife, Charlene Annette "Ann" Rivenbark Porter; brothers, David R. Porter and George Alex Porter both of Rocky Point; stepson, Brent Newton of Burgaw, grandchildren, Breanna Newton and Savannah Newton; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He cherished his family and always found joy in spending time with them.

Jay had a deep connection to the land and enjoyed the simple pleasures of farming, gardening, and trapping. Working the soil brought him a sense of peace and fulfillment, and he took great pride in the fruits of his labor. His green thumb and love for nature were evident in the vibrant gardens he cultivated throughout his life.

The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 10, 2023 at Long Creek Baptist Church. A service to celebrate Jay's life will follow at11:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow in the Porter Family Cemetery on Porter Road. Family, friends, and all who knew Jay are invited to attend the service and pay their final respects to a remarkable man who touched their lives.

In this time of mourning, the family kindly requests that any donations be made in Jay's memory to a charitable organization or cause of your choosing, as a way to honor his life and the causes he held dear.

Although Jay's presence will be deeply missed, his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, and a deep connection to the land he cherished.

May John "Jay" Edwin Porter, Jr. rest in eternal peace, forever remembered as a devoted husband, a beloved brother, and an inspiration to all who knew him.
