John "Butch" Edward Lawhorne, Jr., age 81, of Wilmington, NC passed away on July 20, 2023 at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC.

He was born on August 18, 1941 in Wilmington, NC to the late John Edward Lawhorne, Sr. and Charity Mae Turner Lawhorne.

Butch, an Army National Guard veteran, loved classic cars and was a member of Sun Coast Cruisers, a family-oriented car club in Wilmington. John was very proud of his family. He loved his friends and family very much. Butch was a bright light to many and will be dearly missed.

Butch is survived by his wife, Debra Lynn Lawhorne; his children, Missy Lawhorne Hutsell-Tigert, Kenneth Edward Lawhorne and Kristen Marie Lawhorne; sister, Kathy Poniros (George); grandchildren, Julia Hutsell and Sawyer Tigert; nephews, David Byrd, Dean Byrd, Eric Stanton and Ryan Stanton; and beloved nieces, grandnieces and grandnephews.

In addition to his parents, Butch was also preceded in death by his sister, Sylvia Lawhorne Mooring.

A memorial service will be held at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home in Wilmington on Monday, July 24, 2023 at 6pm with Pastor Tom Male officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
