Obituary

John Hunter Wynne, Sr., 85, of Burgaw passed peacefully on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. He was born January 16, 1926 in Enfield, the son of the late Clarence W. and Annie Jane Beal Wynne.

John is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Catherine Cayton Wynne; daughters, Jewell Anne Wynne Sikes of Wilmington and Judy Wynne Beam (Bob) of Myrtle Beach, SC; son, John Hunter Wynne, Jr. (Joyce) of Watha; granddaughter, Opal Sikes-Satrapa (Vance) of Raleigh; great grandson, Xander Wade Satrapa; brother, James T. Wynne of Virginia Beach, Virginia; sister, Joan W. Marshall (Dick) of Dayton, Ohio and friend of 65 years, Dave Howard. Preceded in death were three brothers and one sister.

He served honorably as a Coxswain V6 in the US Navy during WWII. Afterwards, John attended NC State University, receiving degrees in Animal Husbandry and Crop Science. In 1952 John went to work with the NC Agricultural Extension Service as an Agent in Onslow County. Later he moved to Burgaw as a dairy farm advisor and as the Pender County 4-H Agent, retiring in 1981.

Catherine and John traveled extensively across the US in their motor home; spending winters in Florida and making many friends along the way. John, as a good steward of the land, joyously raised vegetables in his two acre garden for 55 years. He generously shared the fruits of his labors with family and friends. Mr. Wynne was a faithful member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church. John was a man of faith, of honor and integrity who will be greatly missed.

Funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2011 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church with The Rev. Fletcher Wells and The Rev. Bob Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Park. Prior to the funeral, the family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Friday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home.

Casketbearers will be Jack Stocks, Jimbo Robbins, Bert Yepko, Chauncey, Armin Jancis and Griff Weld.
