Joseph Paul
Mehalko
Mar 12, 1955 — Nov 30, 2023
Joseph (Buddy) Paul Mehalko, age 68, of Wilmington, NC passed away on November 30, 2023.
He was born on March 12, 1955 in Pender County, NC to the late Pete Mehalko and Lois Barnhill Mehalko of Pender County, NC.
Joseph leaves behind his son, Jason Paul Mehalko. When asked shortly before his death what he was most proud of, his answer was "my son". He described his son as a good man, a hard worker, a great father and husband and most of all "his greatest accomplishment in life".
Joseph loved hunting and fishing. He would fish in any weather including once during an approaching hurricane. Joseph at one point broke the record for King Mackerel and Spanish Mackerel on Johnny Mercers pier at Wrightsville Beach.
Joseph's career spanned years in NC in construction.
He led and directed crews to build some of the most elaborate and beautiful homes in our area. He took great pride in his work and put a part of himself in every home he built. He cared for and felt a responsibility to families for any home he was involved in building.
Joseph was a generous caring man who in his own words said, "I've tried to treat people right and not take more than I give". He helped others without asking for anything in return; the satisfaction of helping was more than adequate payment for him.
Joseph is survived by his son, Jason Paul Mehalko and wife Summer. His grandchildren Dylan Bryce and London Grace Mehalko. His brother Robert Mehalko and numerous extended family members. Joseph held a very special place in his heart for his cousin Robert Barnhill who he spoke of with great love, admiration and humor, and his Aunt Gladys whom he loved and cared for enormously.
Joseph leaves behind a tremendous legacy of love, laughter and knowledge that will be passed down to future generations.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and held in their hearts with much respect and love forever.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to be made in honor of Joseph Paul Mehalko to St Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Shared memories and condolences may be sent to the family by selecting Tribute Wall above.
