Joseph Porter Newton, age 86, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 29, 2023.

He was born in Wilmington, North Carolina on January 26, 1937 and was the son of the late Carlton Sylvester Newton Sr. and Dora Baker Newton. Joseph was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Renate Pope and his brother, Carlton S. Newton, Jr.

In 1962 Joseph attended seminary in Florida at Bible Baptist Institute where he graduated with an associate degree in theology. A few years later Joseph went on to attend Florida Baptist Theological College where gained another associate degree and was Ordained as a Baptist Minister. Joseph was a man who loved God and his family. He had a strong passion for working with and encouraging hearing impaired people young and old.

Left to cherish the memory of this man of Godly faith is his son, Brent Newton and his wife, Allyson; two daughters, Enid Walker and Dora Simon and her husband, Bryan; three sisters, Carleen Catoe, Clara McCrary, and Shirley Inscoe; long time and very close friend, Sandra Rackley: six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Joseph will be held on Sunday, December 3, 2023 at 3:00 PM in the Quinn McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with the Rev. Billy Fowler officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
