Joseph Guenther
Williams
December 13, 1962 – June 8, 2026
Joseph Guenther Williams, lovingly known as "Opa Joe," passed away peacefully at his home in Burgaw, North Carolina, on June 8, 2026, at the age of 63.
Born on December 13, 1962, in Fuerth, Germany, to Joseph Edward Williams (1940-2015) and Sigtrud Scheu (1935-2015), Joe was a beloved brother to all of his siblings, who shared the following remembrance:
"Growing up, he was the life of our family get-togethers, especially when we were with our beloved Tante. He always found a way to make us laugh with his endearing and sometimes slightly 'not for polite company' humor. As the oldest brother, he acted as our protector. His kind, gentle, loving, and joy-filled spirit was a blessing to us all, and he will be sorely missed… but never forgotten. Until we meet again, dear brother and friend, the memory of you is always in our hearts and brings us much comfort and joy."
Joseph carried a deep love for both his German heritage and the United States throughout his life. A proud veteran of the United States Army, he served his country with honor.
Opa Joe was a familiar face at Burgaw Alimente, where he managed the bakery and became known for his authentic German cakes and desserts. Through his baking, he shared a piece of his heritage with the community and brought joy to countless customers over the years.
A talented man who could seemingly fix anything, Joseph believed in doing things the right way. He was meticulous in his work, took pride in every detail, and was known for his honesty and strong character. He had a steadfast reliability that family, friends, and customers came to admire and respect.
Above all, Joseph loved his family. As "Opa Joe," he took immense pride in his children and grandchildren and treasured the moments spent with them. He shared nearly 20 years of marriage with his wife, Margaret Williams, and was a devoted husband who loved and protected her throughout their life together.
His faith was the foundation of his life. As a Roman Catholic man, Joseph's love for Jesus Christ guided his actions and strengthened him through life's challenges.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brother, Walter Williams (1969-2015), and his son, Joseph Shawn Williams (1983-2024).
He is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret Williams; his son, Michael Williams; his daughter, Holly Liao; his daughter, Heather Zwygart and her husband, Raul Zwygart; and his cherished grandchildren, Maya, Laken, Zoe, Everly, and Henry. He is also survived by his sisters, Theresa Cooke, Angela Moreno, and Michaela Baca; many beloved nieces and nephews, including Alexia Cooke McClure, Patrick Cooke, Joshua Williams, Clarissa Ruff, Esperanza Moreno, Janelle Baca, Marisa Baca, Angelo Baca, Nicholas Williams, Matthew Williams, and Natalie Williams; as well as numerous extended family members and dear friends.
Though we will miss him deeply, we find comfort in the joy he brought to so many lives and in the legacy of love, friendship, and community he leaves behind.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
