Laura Elizabeth Bordeaux, age 98, of Wilmington died Saturday, October 10, 2009 at Pender Memorial Hospital.
She was born November 3, 1910 in Wilmington where she lived most of her life, the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Julia Hand Bordeaux. Remembered are her brothers, James Davis Bordeaux and William Harlee Bordeaux and sister, Julia Humphrey Harrison who all preceded Laura in death.
Laura leaves behind to cherish her memory her nieces and nephews, Gloria Whitney, Joyce Steenson, William H. Bordeaux, Barbara Garrett, Betty Srsic, Nancy Benson, William James Bordeaux, M. Jennings Humphrey, and Julie Humphrey Burns and their families.
Miss Bordeaux graduated from East Carolina Teacher's College (now East Carolina University) and taught school for several years. After 20 years of service she retired as a civil service employee at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville.
Laura lived independently in her own home until the age of 96 at which time she went to live with her niece, Barbara and Charles Garrett. She also often stayed with her niece, Julie Burns in Atkinson. Laura loved her nieces and nephews as if they were her own children.
Laura was a faithful life long member of First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington and also enjoyed with her sister, Julia, attending Keenagers at St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church. She was an avid bridge player and in years past enjoyed a game of Bingo. Laura was a true Southern lady who will be long remembered and greatly missed.
On Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Laura Bordeaux will lie in state at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home for anyone desiring to visit.
The family will receive friends 2:00 to 2:45 p.m. Monday in the church parlor at First Presbyterian Church followed by the funeral service at 3:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary with the Rev. Dr. William P. Brown officiating.
Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be Erich Vereen, Peter Srsic, Jimmy Benson, Paul Benson, Lancey Rivenbark, Jr. and Robert Garrett.
