Obituary

Luba Korba Garriss, 79, of Wallace left this earthly life for her eternal rest on Tuesday, November 11, 2015 from UNC Hospital.

She was born June 27, 1936 in Westchester County, New York and was the youngest of six children of the late Alex and Sophia Hawrylchak Korba. Luba was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Elvin Valson Garriss, and her siblings, Mae, Harry, William, Thomas and Vera.

Surviving to cherish her memory is her son, Jay V. Garriss and wife, Melissa of Locust Grove, VA. and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

While a teenager, Luba developed a passionate love for the game of golf. Determined to be the best player she could be, she practiced for hours and played at every opportunity. Before she turned 20 years old, she entered the annual Westchester County Amateur Ladies Golf Tournament, a city-wide competition held in New York City's largest suburb. She took first place that year -- as well as each of the next 20 years. When her husband, Elvin, proposed marriage, Luba accepted on the condition that she would be able to play as much golf as she wanted to. Elvin agreed if Luba would go deer hunting with him. And so an exciting 39 year partnership began with relocation to Wallace. To finance her golf travels, Luba went to work as breakfast cook for McDonald's. Over the next 25 years, hundreds of Wallace residents came to know Miss Luba as the friendly face of breakfast at McDonald's. When Elvin's health began to fail, Luba left her McDonald's career and golfing travels to care for him. Yet even in 2015, strangers from Wallace to Wilmington would still stop Luba in a store and ask, "Aren't you the lady who fixed hot cakes for me when I was a kid?" Luba was a larger than life person who was impossible to forget.
