Luther Clayton
Herring, Jr.
Dec 8, 1945 — Oct 8, 2022
Luther Clayton Herring, Jr., age 76, of Rose Hill left this earthly life for his eternal rest on Saturday, October 8, 2022.
He was born on December 8, 1945, in Wadesboro, NC to the late Luther Clayton Herring, Sr. and Nettie Cameron Herring. Mr. Herring was also preceded in death by his devoted wife, Karen Jackson Herring.
Clayton proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard for 20 years. After the military, he continued to serve others. Clayton served his community for 50 years with Rose Hill Volunteer Fire Department, in which 16 of those years he was Fire Chief. With a servant's heart, Clayton was also a dedicated volunteer with EMS for 38 years. Loving his town and community, Clayton and Karen were active in the Rose Hill Jaycees, and he served Rose Hill as Town Commissioner for 16 years and Mayor for 4 years. Clayton was also a life-long member of Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church where he served in various positions.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his sons, Scott Herring of Surf City and Chris Herring and wife, Fayth of Rose Hill; grandchildren, Jonae` Herring and Taylor Herring; sister, Linda Mottley and husband, Keith of Virginia; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends that loved and respected Clayton.
Clayton was a loving husband and caring father, grandfather and brother who loved his family dearly. He was a quiet, laid-back gentleman who was always willing to help anyone in need. Clayton was very gifted in restoring old furniture and was very proud of his work. He loved his granddaughters and was so loved in return. To them he was "Grampy". Most of all, Clayton loved the Lord and he lived his life as an example of that love. A man of great integrity; always putting others before himself, Clayton will be missed by all who knew him. His friends and family are comforted knowing that he has moved on from this life to the fuller one he now has with God through eternity.
