Macon Worth Smith, age 87, of Willard passed from this earthly home to his eternal rest on Friday, January 7, 2011 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
He was born December 18, 1923 in Pender County; the son of the late Dockey Quinn and Dolly Jarman Smith. He was also predeceased by his loving wife of fifty-five years, Mary Anderson Smith.
Mr. Smith served his country honorably in the US Army during WWII from March, 1943 to January, 1946. While proudly serving his country, he earned the Bronze Star Medal, in addition to several other service awards. After returning home from the army, Macon began farming and joined his father in the family business which became known as D.Q. Smith & Son, Inc., which he owned and operated for forty-eight years. Mr. Smith was a devoted member of American Legion, Post 156 and Watha United Methodist Church. Macon was truly a servant to his country, his community, his church and his family.
Surviving are his loving children, Nelson Smith (Betsy) of Chatham, VA and Janet Wester (Bryan) of Southport; grandchildren, Thad Wester (fiancee, Georgiana Key), Katherine Wester, Kevin Smith (Sarah) and Kelly Smith; great grandchildren, Kaitlin Smith and Macon Smith; step grandchildren, Scott Neal (Melissa) and Beth Washabaugh (Corey); step great grandchildren, Madeline Neal, Zachary Neal, Elizabeth Washabaugh and Dylan Washabaugh; sisters, Bettie S. Dresser (Phillip) of Wilmington and Grace S. Kirkland (Paul) of Williamsburg, VA; sister-in-law, Esther Webb of Watha and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral service will be 11:00 am Monday, January 10, 2011 at Watha United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Fedoronko officiating.
Burial will follow with military honors in Watha United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be Thad Wester, Kevin Smith, Jim Kirkland, Mike Kirkland, Tom Anderson and Wright Anderson.
Honorary Casketbearers will be members of American Legion, Post 156.
The family will receive friends 5 to 7:00 pm Sunday, January 9, 2011 at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home in Wallace and other times at Mr. Smith's residence.
