Obituary

Margaret Evans Trawick York, 93, of Burgaw passed peacefully from her earthly life Friday, August 6, 2010 at Pender Memorial Hospital.

She was born October 27, 1916 in Marianna, Florida, the daughter of Charles Herbert and Stella Key Evans. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Foster Trawick in 1968 and later married Norman Monroe York, who died in 2001. Also remembered is her son, Ross Foster Trawick, Jr.

Margaret is survived by her sons, Gary E. Trawick and his wife, Jennings, of Burgaw and Bill Trawick of Charleston, South Carolina; grandchildren, Evans Trawick (Angie) of Wilmington, Sarah McConnell (Jason) of Cornelius, and Helen Morisey (Frank) of Raleigh; and great grandchildren, Jarrett Trawick, Alex Durham, Preston McConnell, Hunter McConnell and Bailes Morisey.

She was secretary of Burgaw Baptist Church, serving during the tenure of five ministers. Margaret retired as a reading tutor with the Pender County School System, serving in Burgaw and Rocky Point schools.

Before joining Burgaw Presbyterian Church upon her marriage to Norman York, she was a member of Burgaw Baptist Church where she served as president of the Women's Missionary Union, superintendent of the Youth Sunday School Department and member of the Building and Grounds Committee. At Burgaw Presbyterian Church she served on the Visitation Team and several committees.

She attended an international conference on children at the United Nations, representing the Pender County Home Extension Services. She made talks to numerous churches and clubs about the plight of children living in poverty around the world.

Margaret helped organize and was president of the Pender County Junior Women's Club and was a member of the Pender Watch and Conservancy.

She served on the Pender County Planning Board for six years where she opposed permits for the location in Pender County of Thermal Kem, a nuclear waste disposal plant.

She was a certified Master Gardner and her yard was evidence of her passion for gardening and nature.

Margaret Trawick York lived a great and full life; leaving a legacy of faith, hope and joy to her family and all who knew her.

A memorial service will be at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 15, 2010 at Burgaw Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Ray Mendenhall officiating. Immediately following the memorial service the family will receive friends at the Historic Burgaw Depot.
