Marshall Edward
Wells
Mar 26, 1917 — Aug 19, 2013
Marshall Edward Wells, 96, of Ivanhoe died Monday, August 19, 2013 at Pender Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 26, 1917 in Sampson County, the son of Tince Marshall and Mary Sykes Wells. He was predeceased by brothers, James and Paul Fulton Wells; and sisters, Doretha Barnhill and Elizabeth Johnson.
He is survived by nieces, Rita Johnson, Mary Ivy Woodward and Ellen Smith; nephew, Marvin Barnhill, Jr.; sister-in-law, Anna Wells; and numerous great nieces and great nephews.
Marshall served his country honorably in the US Army during WW II and was the recipient of several service awards.
He was a long time faithful member of Black River Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. His dedication to his church was evident by his works, word, and deed. Though Marshall never married and had children of his own, he was a true "family man". His family was his parents, siblings and extended family. He was very loyal to his parents; his mother died when he was 15 and Marshall helped his dad and sister, Doretha, tremendously as they strived to make a home for his younger brothers, James and Fulton. Marshall was an avid hunter and fisherman, knowing each curve, cove and bass bed in the Black River waters near Ivanhoe.
Memories of Marshall Wells, by all who knew him, will be a man in denim overalls with a little chew in the cheek. He will be missed especially by Rita, Mary Ivy, Ellen, Buddy and their families. Marshall made many dear friends while in the tender care of special caregivers.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at Black River Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Steve Gasque and Mr. Leroy Sykes officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
