Obituary

Mattie Lou Douglas Bailey, age 93, of Wilmington died peacefully Saturday, August 22, 2009 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

She was born July 4, 1916 in Pink Hill and was the daughter of the late Walter Douglas and Lillie Giddeons Douglas Bornman. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Ruby Bozievich.

Surviving are her devoted and loving children, Martha Brown (Gary) of Timberlake, John Haggerty III (Linda) of Green Valley, Arizona, and Jean Rivenbark (Pete) of Wilmington; grandchildren, David Brown (Jackie), Tracy Almond (Michael), John Haggerty IV (Jana), Sherri Long (Robert) and Kris Horgan (Christopher); six great grandchildren; and sister, Myrtle Frye of Wallace.

Mattie spent her later years as a volunteer with Meals On Wheels and as a "Pink Lady" at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. One of the joys in Mattie's life was her participation in the Senior Olympic Games and the Senior Cheerleading Squad. She was a founding and faithful member of Glad Tidings Community Church.

Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with Pastor Henry Carroll officiating.

Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Park.

Casketbearers will be Donnie Augustine, Roland "Bobo" Rivenbark, Raymond Lanier, Robert Long, David Brown, and John Schoolfield.
