Obituary

A kind and energetic soul, a gracious and giving lady, Mavis Newton Barrett, entered into the  glory of her Lord on Friday, February 10, 2023  at the age of 83. She was at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Jesse Vernon

She was born December 11, 1939 in Pender County, the daughter of Ernest Alderman Newton and Valeria Mae McIntyre Newton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard L. Barrett, Sr.; son, Howard L. Barrett, Jr.; brother, Cleo Allen Newton; and great granddaughter, Aleigh.

Mavis is survived by her daughters, Jane Newton Marshburn and husband, Charlie and Karen Barrett Vernon and husband, Jesse; grandchildren, Bailey Wilkes, Katie Wilkes, Jeff Marshburn (Kayla), April Vernon, Amy Vernon, and Tripp Barrett (Drew); great grandchildren, Martin, Jordon, Isabelle and Spencer; daughter-in-law, Lynn Barrett; sister, Norma Jones; brother, Ernest Elvin Newton; special friends of many, many years, Evelyn Sandlin and Gail Caison; many extended family members and friends, all who loved Mavis.

Having a strong Christian faith, Mavis was a faithful member of Cross Roads Church where she was so welcomed and taken care of.

Mavis was a lady of varied talents and careers. In her young adult years Mavis was a licensed cosmetologist. In later years Mavis worked in several clothing manufacturing companies as she was an accomplished seamstress. Her daughters remember the beautifully designed prom dresses and wedding dresses that Mavis made. Mavis was a lady of fashion and dressed accordingly.

Fun loving and young at heart describes Mavis perfectly. She never met a stranger, could strike up a conversation anytime, anywhere, with anybody. Mavis enjoyed the company of young folks as she never acknowledged or felt her age. In her later years, Mavis and her sister, Norma, developed a close and abiding relationship that withstood the test of time. Most of all Mavis was a caring and giving lady who loved her family with all her heart.

The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at Cross Roads Church, 181 Wallace Hwy, Harrells, NC 28444 and at other times will be at the home of Karen and Jesse Vernon.

Following the visitation funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Pastor Earl Smith will conduct the service. Burial will follow in Peterson Cemetery.
