Obituary

Melrose Rivenbark Garriss, age 82, of Watha died Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Cypress Point Nursing Home in Wilmington.

She was born on January 25, 1935 in Pender County and was the daughter of the late Leon D. and Myrtle Young Rivenbark. She is also predeceased by her husband, Herbert H. Garriss, her son, Marlin G. Garriss; granddaughter, Ginger Magoon and brothers, James E. Rivenbark and Marvin G. Rivenbark.

Mrs. Garriss was a member of Watha PFWB Church.

Surviving are her sons, Allen V. Garriss and wife, Debbie of Watha and Herbert L. Garriss and wife, Angie of Washington, NC; grandchildren, Candy Garriss, Herbert Glen Garriss and Josie Leann Garriss, great grandchildren, Breiana Magoon, Jonathan Magoon and Isabella Garriss; sister, Dorothy Letendre of Wilmington and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Melrose was a devoted wife and caring mother, grandmother and sister who loved her family dearly. Being a hard worker, she worked at J.P. Stevens until retirement, taught macramé for Cape Fear Community College, loved scrapbooking, as well as caring for 3 boys and a husband. Melrose was a determined lady who wouldn't let anything stop what she set out to do. As busy as she was, she also earned her pilot license while her boys were small and holding down a full time job. Melrose was a woman of uncommon character, beauty and grace; and to those who knew her, "an instrument of God's love on this earth." Melrose was a friend to all, a strong yet gentle presence who looked for and encouraged the best in everyone. Melrose will surely be missed but cherished memories of her will forever remain in our hearts.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Watha United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Reverends Elbert and Juanita Hollowell officiating.
