Obituary

Mickey Winborne King, 93, of Wilmington and formerly of Burgaw passed gently from her earthly life into the glory of her Lord Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at her home, Champions Assisted Living.

She was born December 4, 1928 and was the daughter of Worth Milton and Emma Maultsby Winborne. In addition to her parents Mickey was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William "Bill" Morris King and sister, Carol Winborne.

Mickey is survived by her daughters, Terry DeLong (Bob), Karen Carter (Stuart), and Susan King-Lanier; son, Worth King (Karen); grandchildren, Rebecca Rouse (Mark), Joanna Mizesko (Matt), William DeLong, Abigail Shaw (Neal), and Jonathan Lanier (Madison); great grandchildren, Kaia, Olivia, Elora, Ezekiel, Elliot, Emmerson, and great-grandchild expected in July to the Mizesko family;  sisters in friendship, Peggy Casey, Sue Cooper, and Janice Sessoms.

Mickey was born in Augusta, GA, but lived most of her life in southeastern NC. Wilmington was home during her high school years and after. She graduated from New Hanover High School and went on to nursing school at James Walker Hospital Nursing Program. Upon completion she began her life-long nursing career, with various facets of nursing, teaching, and volunteer work with the Council of Governments in the Regional Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program.

She and Bill (William) were married 50 years, living and working the land on the King family farm in Burgaw. It was there she grew as a homemaker, learning a multitude of skills in frugality, making things last, raising a family, and "nursing" any and everyone who needed a kind touch. Mickey had an eye for anything hand-work, and she excelled in sewing, knitting, needle work, ceramics, basket-weaving, and quilting. As a member of the oldest Extension Homemakers Club in NC, she learned many other skills and was an active member in that group for more than 60 years. The Annual Holiday House in Burgaw was an event she loved and worked to make successful.

She, with Bill, was committed to and passionate about their church, Burgaw Methodist, and loved worshiping Jesus, their Lord and Good Shepherd they knew so well. They befriended every pastor who came. She was involved with the Administrative Board, Susanna Wesley Circle, the youth group (while all the children were there), Bible studies, mission projects, and a host of other events and activities. Mickey's heart was for people, and she treasured knowing and loving them.

One of her favorite things was to travel, and she did so as much as she could, both domestic and international, with Bill or any other person she could persuade to go with her. She determined to share her joy of learning new cultures with many, especially her grandchildren. It was a delight to learn together, and to see many places around the globe. Those were special times as they got to be together for long periods of time one-on-one.

The relationship she had with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was very special. With a name like Mickey and celebrating a birth year with a very famous Mouse by the same name, her name was changed to "Gramma Mouse". They all cherished their time with her, and she with them.

The Lions Club International was a philanthropy she joined in her older years. It was a great joy to support vision care throughout the schools of Pender County, lend aid to Camp Dogwood for the Blind's mission, and participate in the Burgaw Birthday Calendar project. Ever supporting health and wellness, this group gave her an outlet to serve across diverse cultures, ages, and abilities.

As she matured in years, a natural progression was to move into assisted living at Champions of the Davis Community. There she threw herself into the life of the facility, still encouraging the staff, and mentoring any of the CNAs who sought her out for advice, help in their studies, or stories of her experiences in nursing over the decades. She sewed and crafted, engaged in the social hours, and genuinely wove her kind spirit into the hearts of the staff for more than 4 years. She will be so missed.

Mickey King knew life's struggles, peaks, heartbreak, and highest joys. She has left a mark on any who knew her, and we are most grateful to have known and loved her.
