Mildred Casteen Lanier Murray, 92, of Burgaw was granted her angel wings Thursday evening, October 24, 2013 as she was surrounded by her loving family at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
She was born December 21, 1920 in Duplin County, the daughter of the late Samuel Wright and Beulah Teachey Casteen. Also remembered are her beloved husband and father of their sons, Johnnie Lewis Lanier; her husband later in life, John Herman Murray; and her sons, Larry Lanier and Samuel Lanier.
Mildred is survived by her sons, Johnnie Ray Lanier (Cathy), Gene Lanier (Naomi), Ken Lanier (Faye), Don Lanier (Linda), Randy Lanier, and Robert Lanier (Rose); 17 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sisters, Effie Chestnut and Virginia Gurganious; and many extended family and friends, who all loved Mildred.
For a number of years Mildred attended Friendly Community Baptist Church.
Mildred was a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. In addition to raising eight sons, Mildred found time to enjoy quilting, sewing, fishing and being outdoors in all of God's beauty and nature. She always had a smile on her face, a helping hand stretched out and a heart ready to show the love of Christ within her. Mildred leaves a wonderful legacy of love, compassion, and faith in Jesus Christ for us to remember.
Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with The Rev. Nathan Morton and The Rev. Curtis Vann officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. until hour of the service.
