Obituary

Retired Master Sergeant, Robert John Murray, 85, of Burgaw, passed from this life into the presence of his Heavenly Father on January 24, 2017 at his home surrounded by family.
Mr. Murray was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Anna Murray, in 2015.

Surviving is his daughter, Sharon Hardison of Burgaw; and son, Todd Murray (Rebekah) of Burgaw. Also surviving is his granddaughter, Brittney Hardison of Holly Springs; and grandsons, Hayden and Adam Murray of Burgaw.

Born in New York, NY on January 9, 1932, Mr. Murray joined the United States Marine Corps in 1951. He served his country honorably until his retirement in 1972. During those years, he served two tours in Vietnam and was awarded The Good Conduct Medal with 5 Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Mast, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Star and National Defense Service Medal with 1 Star.

After his retirement, Mr. Murray moved his family back to North Carolina and eventually ran Murray's Service Station and Grill at Watha Crossroads. He was a faithful member, Trustee, and tireless worker at Mt. Holly Baptist Church for many years. He was an avid hunter and an accomplished bowler, winning numerous high average trophies and tournaments; however, nothing came before the love of his grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 2:00pm at Mt. Holly Baptist Church, 5551 US Hwy. 117, Burgaw, with the Reverend Merrell McKoy officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Entombment will follow the service at Riverview Memorial Park Mausoleum on US 117, Watha, with full Military Honors. The family will receive friends at other times at Mr. Murray's home.

Family would like to thank Misty Scarberry, RN, and Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their care of Mr. Murray and the encouragement and support given them. Flowers are welcome or donations to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
