Nancy Johnson Applewhite, age 71, of Atkinson, a very special loving lady passed gently from her earthly life Sunday, June 11, 2023 at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.

She was born February 13, 1952 in Wilmington, the daughter of the late Lee Roy Johnson, Sr. and Alice Squires Johnson.

Nancy graduated from Atkinson High School and continued her education at UNCW graduating with a degree in Nursing. She furthered her education receiving a teaching degree and taught medical sciences for thirty years at Pender High School.

She enjoyed traveling, especially going on family vacations. She stayed young by living the best life she could and by spending time with her kids and grandkids. Even through the rough times something that always kept her happy was shopping, she loved thrift shops and clearance sales. Nancy's kids and grandkids gave her and Wayne so much joy; she loved them with all of her heart. Most of all Nancy was a devoted Christian and she loved and believed in Jesus Christ. Nancy's genuine smile and joyful spirit will remain in the hearts and thoughts of everyone who knew her.

Nancy is survived by her beloved family; her husband of 51 years, Wayne Blanchard Applewhite; son, Bryan Applewhite (Kristi); daughters, Wendy Lea Applewhite  and Kelly Farnham (who was like a daughter); grandchildren, Justin Henry, Taylor Applewhite, Shelby Applewhite, Hope Fussell, and Violet Applewhite; great granddaughter, Skylar Henry; brother, Lee Roy Johnson, Jr. (Gay); many extended family and friends all who dearly loved Nancy.

The family will receive friends at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 17, 2023 at Quinn McGowen Funeral Burgaw Chapel with service at 4:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Pastor Jacob Lewis will conduct the service.

Interment will follow in Woodcock Cemetery.
