Nancy Young
Taylor
June 15, 1917 – March 20, 2012
Nancy Young Taylor, age 94, of Burgaw, NC, went to be with the Lord in the early hours of Tuesday, March 20, 2012, the first day of spring.
She was born June 15, 1917 in Newton, NC, the daughter of Joseph Alexander Young and Mary Emma Hoyle Young. Nancy grew up in the Methodist Church, was a graduate of Newton High School and Women's College in Greensboro (now UNC-G). On June 8, 1940 Nancy married William Ivey Taylor of Burgaw and she joined Ivey to live in Philadelphia while he completed his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College. In 1941 they returned to Burgaw where he assumed his father's medical practice and where Nancy and Dr. Taylor lived the rest of their lives.
Mrs. Taylor was an active volunteer in community life as a volunteer with P.T.A., Pender Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Cape Fear Adult Literacy, and the Pender County Museum Docents. She was a past member of Burgaw Research Club, and had enjoyed playing bridge and golf. For many years she was a devoted member of Burgaw Presbyterian Church and was honored with a lifetime membership in the Women of the Church. She also served on the synod level as treasurer. In 1999 she joined her family as a founding member of New Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian Church where she took great joy as a preschool Sunday school teacher. She loved to study the Bible.
Nancy was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, William Ivey Taylor, MD and their son, Joseph Knox Taylor. She is survived by her sons, William Ivey "Bill" Taylor, III and his wife, Ruth, and Michael Young Taylor and his wife, Alicia; daughter-in-law, Sandra M. Taylor; and grandchildren, Roberta LaSure (Bruce), William Taylor (Dara), Anne Cagwin (Tim), Knox Taylor (Mollie), Ivey Taylor and Laura Taylor Ulrich (Billie); and great grandchildren, Taylor and Kristin LaSure; Alix, Alarin, Cypress, and Moss Taylor; Claire and Joe Cagwin; Jake Taylor; and Carter Ulrich. She is also survived by special nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Nancy had nearly 100 Hoyle and Young first cousins, and she was the next to the last member of that generation to pass on. Nancy learned to face adversity at an early age as when she was 12 she lost her mother and her father when she was 20. She was a strong lady who faced the loss of her beloved husband and son with courage and resilient spirit, drawing strength from her faith in Christ. Despite her declining health she lived her last days with optimism and hope knowing that a better place was prepared for her in heaven.
