Nell Scott Sandifer Barnhill, 87, of Wilmington passed away on February 5, 2015 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center of Wilmington. Nell was born in Pender County on September 15, 1927, the daughter of the late Walter Lee and Hattie Lea Peay Scott. Nell was preceded in death by husband, James H. (Pete) Sandifer and husband, Robert T. Barnhill.
Nell grew up in Rocky Point, NC and graduated in 1945 as class valedictorian of Long Creek Grady High School. After graduation from high school, she attended Campbell College in Buies Creek, NC. Her employers included the New Hanover County Health Department, Long Creek Grady Elementary School, The USS NC Battleship Memorial and Belk. Nell was an active lifelong member of Riley's Creek Baptist Church where she once served as President of the Woman's Missionary Union. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star A.R.E.M.E. Chapter #372 of Wilmington. Nell enjoyed gardening, cooking and researching her family genealogy.
Surviving is a daughter, Leanne Sandifer Braswell (Keith) of Wilkesboro, NC and an aunt, Frances Peay Lewis of Charlotte. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express its thanks and deep appreciation to the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice & Life Care Center.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 9, 2015 at 11:00 am at Riley's Creek Baptist Church with visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Pastor Jim Herchenhahn will officiate. Interment will follow at the Riley's Creek Memorial Cemetery.
