Norma Ruth Hooks Mekler, 73, left this earthly life on Monday, January 8, 2024 to be forever with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

She was born on July 24, 1950, in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Floyd Haire and Doris Lamm Quinn.

Norma was a dedicated member of Wallace Church of God where she was very active.  She served as a Sunday School teacher,  church food bank, and the feeding of sick and bereaved families, among other ministries in the church.  Norma and Sheldon served in the mission field four different times.

Surviving to cherish her memory is her devoted husband of 28 years, Sheldon Mekler of the home; her sons, Terry Hooks, Billy Hooks and Bobby Hooks; stepchildren, Terri Hurst, Marla Daugherty, Laure Motsteller, Tony Mekler and Stephanie Mekler; twenty-two grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sister, Cindy Chappell and husband Max; numerous extended family and friends that loved Norma dearly.

Norma was a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother and sister. She was a kind and compassionate woman who was devoted to her Lord, her family and her church. With a big heart, Norma touched many people in her life; from one end of the earth to the other. She served with her husband on a mission trip in South Africa on three different occasions and in Columbia South America.  Norma was always ready and eager to help others.   Norma was truly an instrument of God's love on this earth.   Sheldon considers himself very blessed that God blessed him with Norma. She was without a doubt God's gift to him. Her children are also very proud to call her "MaMa". Norma will surely be missed but treasured memories of her will never be forgotten.

Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at Wallace Church of God in Teachey with the Reverend Todd Narron officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial will follow the service at Woodcock Cemetery in Atkinson, NC.

Pallbearers will be Terry Foley, Max Chappell, Donald Parker, Mike Herring, Lloyd Strickland and John Strickland.

Honorary pallbearers will be Wade Horrell and Sherwood Ezzell.
