Watha- Olive Wooten Newkirk, 97, passed away at her home on Thursday, November 11, 2010.
Born August 15, 1913 in Pender County, Olive was the fourth of ten children of Rev. Bryant Henry Wooten and Hattie Rawls Wooten. She was preceded in death by six siblings and her beloved husband of 67 years, Joseph St. Clair Newkirk and son, David Nash Newkirk and his wife, Velna Brown Newkirk. She is survived by her daughter, Gayle Newkirk Rivenbark and her husband, James B. Rivenbark of Wilmington; granddaughters, Nadine Strickland Bradshaw and husband, Harry Bradshaw of Wallace, Susan Elizabeth Rivenbark of Leland; grandson, Jay Rivenbark of Wilmington; great grandsons, Ashley Bradshaw and wife, Susan of Wallace and Bryan Bradshaw of Burgaw; great-great granddaughters, Olivia Grace, Maggie Ray and Claire Elizabeth Bradshaw of Wallace; sisters, Effie Newkirk of Watha, Edna Peterson of Fayetteville and Daisie Craft of Raleigh; sisters-in-law, Mazie Wooten of Wilmington and Doris Wooten of Maple Hill and many nieces and nephews.
Olive was a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church since 1933 and loved being there every time the doors opened. She served as an officer in the Women of the Church many times. For a number of years she enjoyed the Home Demonstration Club. Olive welcomed family and friends in her home often. Her meals and hugs made everyone feel loved and adopted into her family. In addition to cooking and sewing, Olive enjoyed crocheting, painting, quilting, ceramics, basket weaving and canasta. She will be missed by all who knew her and enjoyed her sense of humor.
The family would like to thank her granddaughter, Susan, for spending her weekends with her grandmother; to nieces, Betty Evans and Myra Eakins and nephew, Joseph Bryant Newkirk and his wife, Pauline, for their love and help and to Pauline Gore, Lori Rivenbark and Lizzie Mae Williams for their special caregiving.
Although flowers are appreciated the family suggests donating to the Cemetery Fund at Hopewell Presbyterian Church, c/o Betty Evans, 7195 Hwy 117 N., Watha, NC 28478 or to Carolina East Hospice, PO Box 887, Kenansville, NC 28349 or to a charity of one's choice.
Pallbearers will be her four grandsons, Harry Bradshaw, Jay Rivenbark, Ashley Bradshaw and Bryan Bradshaw, nephew, Glenn Wooten and great nephew, Keith Griffin.
Visitation will be 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, November 14, at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, 308 W. Fremont St., Burgaw. Honoring Olive's wishes, a graveside service will be at 2:00p.m. on Monday, November 15th at Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Hwy 117 North, Burgaw (just past the overpass of I-40) officiated by the Rev. Ralph Evans. Immediately following the graveside service there will be a songfest in the church of Olive's favorite hymns.
