Patrick (Pat) Myles O'Donnell, age 82, of Wilmington, NC passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2023 at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. He was born on May 21, 1940 in Lansing, MI.
Pat was the son of Dr. Dennis & Doris O'Donnell and was raised in Shawano, Wisconsin. He graduated high school in 1959 and Gordon Military College in 1963. He enlisted in the Navy in 1964 where he worked as a dental technician and was stationed in Adak Alaska and Camp Lejeune. After the Navy, he lived in Jacksonville working on the military base. He then moved to Wilmington and was the manager at Arby's Roast Beef where he met his first wife, Wendy. Together they had their son, Shawn. Pat worked and retired from the Cape Fear Dupont Plant in 1988 and Corning in 2002. Pat married his second wife, Betty Butts in 1999 while she was serving as the Deputy Clerk of Superior Court for Duplin County. Pat joined the American Legion in 1973 and quickly became a devoted member of Post 10. He held the offices of Post Adjutant for 18 years, Post Commander, 9th District Vice-Commander, 9th District Commander, Dept Vice Commander Division II, and in 1985-86 was elected Dept Commander for the State of North Carolina. He was inducted in the North Carolina American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame. He also served as the Chef De Gare of the 40/8 voiture 245. Pat also served as an Elder with Rockfish Presbyterian Church in Wallace.
He is survived by his twin brother, Michael/Jean; son Shawn; his first wife Wendy; sister Bridget Mundy/William; brothers Lloyed Pratt/Judy and Kirt Hanford; sisters Judy Osenbaugh/Cecil, Roberta Taylor, Beatrice Burham, Phil Hanford, and Patricia Hanford. stepson Dean Butts/Kim; and grandchildren April and Nic. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In addition to his parents, Pat was also preceded in death by his second wife, Betty.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30pm on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at The Bridge Church, 2101 Market St, Wilmington, NC 28403.
