Peggy Jean Merritt Akers, 82, of Newton Grove, NC left this earthly life for her eternal rest on Tuesday, April 11, 2023.
She was born on December 27, 1940, in Duplin County; the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Gavin Merritt. Mrs. Akers was also preceded in death by her husband, Estes J. Akers, her sisters, Betty Jo Belt, Delores Foxx and Shirley Miller and by her loving canine companion, "Tucker".
Peggy proudly served in the United States Navy for four years.
Surviving are her devoted children, Donna Sykes and husband, Roy of Ivanhoe; son, David Akers and wife, Tammy of Dunn; grandchildren, William Sykes, Clista Sykes, Morgan Sykes, Joshua Akers and Dani Lynn Akers; great grandchildren, Annabelle Phillips, Penelope Sykes, Makenzie Akers, Audrey Akers, J.D. Akers, Trinity Akers, Kate Gibson, Taylor Gibson, Lillian Foss, Gavin Foss and Maddy Akers; sister, Brenda Howard and husband, Richard of Burnsville, NC and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Peggy was a loving mother and caring grandmother who loved her family dearly. She was a simple lady who enjoyed the simple things in life. Being a hard worker, Peggy took great pleasure in working in her yard and being outside enjoying God's beautiful nature. She was very patriotic and very political minded. With a great love for her country she was ready to stand up for it at any time and with anybody. Peggy was a very determined lady who you never had to wonder about what she was thinking. She was always ready to let you know what's on her mind. Among her talents, Peggy weas a great quilter and made many beautiful quilts during her life. She will surely be missed but treasured memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved Peggy.
There will be a Gathering of Family and Friends held from 6:00p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 14, 2023, at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, 612 S. Norwood Street, Wallace, NC 28466.
