Obituary


Porter Scott, 85, died Sunday, August 17, 2008 at his home in Largo, Florida.

He was born May 27, 1923 in Riley's Creek Community in Rocky Point, the son of the late William Porter Scott and Annie L. Merritt Scott. He is also predeceased by his wife, Jeannette Morrill Scott, on May 3, 2006; and brothers, Blondy E. Scott, Harold O. Scott and Arcadia Scott.

Mr. Scott was a graduate of Long Creek Grady High School and served in the US Navy during WW II. He was a carpenter who built homes and made beautiful inlaid wooden boxes. He and his wife, Jeannette, lived in Farmington, Michigan, until their retirement when they moved to Florida, first to Pinellas Park and finally settling in Largo. They like to travel. Jeannette loved music and loved to sing and hum. She was an expert crocheter of many beautiful afghans.

Surviving are a son, Robert Scott of Green River, Wyoming; and daughter, Ann Marie Scott Nicholls (Colin) of Enfield, England; grandchildren, Deana Slone (Edwin) of North Lewisburg, Ohio, Luke Nicholls and Jake Nicholls both of Enfield, England; great granddaughter, Summer Hevelone of Springtown, Texas; sister, Marie Scott Horton (Grag) of Wilmington; brothers, Thurman E. Scott (Frances) of Durham and David Jack Scott (Barbara) of Wilson; and sister-in-law, Barbara Scott of Washington. Extended family includes nieces, nephews and cousins. Jeanette Scott is also survived by a sister, Marion Horton of Cadillac, Michigan.

A memorial service will be held for both Porter and Jeannette Scott on Thursday, September 4, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at Riley's Creek Baptist Church, Rocky Point with the Rev. Melvin Hall officiating.

Inurnment will follow in Scott Cemetery on Scott Road.
