Obituary

The Reverend Dr. Barney William English, age 98, of Wallace left this earthly life and entered joyfully into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, March 19, 2017.

He was born August 22, 1918 in Pender County and was the son of the late Reverend Thomas Smith English and Laura Bland English. Also lovingly remembered is his wife and mother of his children, Estelle Benton English who passed away and his second wife, Edna Jarrell Teachey English; his son, William "Bill" James English; brother, Billy Ray English and sister, Melody Kay English.

Mr. English graduated from Clement High School in Wallace, NC in just 9 years and was Salutatorian his senior year. Among the many colleges he attended, he studied at Stamp Baxter School of Music in Dallas, TX, Juilliard School of Music in New York, Temple University, Wilmington College (now UNC Wilmington), UNC Greensboro and William Carter College and Seminary. From these schools and universities, Mr. English earned multiple degrees including PHD, THD, PSD, MUSD and Master of Education Degree. He was ordained by the Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Denomination and commissioned by the Anglican Church. At the age of 65, Dr. English decided it was time to quit school.

Dr. English served many churches through out his life, with a sincere love for the Lord and for people. He taught music at Carter College and Seminary in Goldsboro. He started the Covenant Theological Seminary which is today associated with East Carolina University. Dr. English also worked with the US Bureau of Missing Persons.

Surviving is his devoted daughter, Elizabeth English Rivenbark and her husband, Floyd "Bill" of Wallace; his grandchildren, Carl Hardison, Jr., Susan Ruddell and husband, James, Lorrie Callaghan and husband, John, Adam Rivenbark and wife, Whitney, Amy Olivas and husband, Servando and Laura Lancaster and husband, David; eleven great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; step children, Dr. Gerald Teachey and wife, Jan and Sharon Dickerson and husband, Dwayne; numerous step grandchildren, nieces, nephews, friends and extended family that loved Barney dearly.

Dr. Barney William English was a loving father and caring grandfather who loved his family dearly. He was an honorable man with great integrity, who lived his life based on Christian principles and instilled Christian values in his children. Barney was dedicated to his community and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever needed.

"Well done thou good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord."

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Peniel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church with Pastors Reverends Elbert and Juanita Hollowell officiating. Interment will follow in Peniel Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Adam Rivenbark, Billy Ray Rivenbark, David Olivas, Christopher Olivas, Servando Olivas and David Lancaster.

The family will receive friends from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Friday evening at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Wallace.
