Obituary

Robert "Corky" Lee Porter, 81, of Rocky Point passed from his earthly life to his eternal rest on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

He was born December 11, 1929 in Currie and was the son of John Alexander and Alice Carver Porter.

Surviving Corky are his devoted wife of 56 years, Ella Moore Porter of the home; daughters, Becky Porter Henderson (Gerald) of Currie and Roberta Porter of Atkinson; step-children, Florence Thompson of Fayetteville and Benny Thompson of New Bern; grandchildren, Mitchell Henderson, Amy Mathews, Johannah Woods, Jimmy Hale, Sarah Hale, and Michael Thompson; ten great grandchildren; sister, Edith Williams of Currie; brother, Richard Porter of Burgaw; many nieces and nephews and his special caregiver, Linda Meeks.

Mr. Porter served his country honorably in the US Navy and was retired from Corning, Inc. For many years he enjoyed farming. He was a faithful member of Moores Creek Baptist Church.

"Corky" was the best husband, daddy, granddaddy, great granddaddy, brother, uncle and friend anyone could ask for. His zest for life, laughter and jokes was unmatched. Coon hunting with his beloved coon dogs, Major and Sarg, was his greatest passion. "Corky" also enjoyed fishing and being a ham radio operator as he and Ella worked with the Pender County Emergency Communications for many years. Rarely ever was "Corky" seen without a toothpick in his mouth and behind his ear. One of his favorite pastimes was to begin his day with "The Breakfast Club", a fun loving group of men. Spending time with "Corky" always lifted one's spirits and made you feel better as he always found the good in everyone. Most of all "Corky" loved his Lord, his family and his fellowman. The fondest of memories of "Corky" will always remain in our hearts.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 23, 2011 at Moores Creek Baptist Church with The Rev. Philip Eakins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Casketbearers will be Jay Porter, David Porter, Alex Porter, Richard Porter, Patrick Miller, and Austin Miller. Honorary bearers will be "The Breakfast Club" men and his many friends.

The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Burgaw.

Well done thou good and faithful servant, enter into your rest.
