Roger James Schmidt passed away peacefully on January 25, 2014 in Wilmington with his wife and family by his side.
Roger was born in Buffalo, NY on October 17, 1932 to the late Richard and Margaret Schmidt. He was preceded in death by his sister Barbara.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Charlene (Chuckie)(nee West), children Joseph (Deborah), John and Lisa (Robert), grandchildren Leanne, Charles (Ashley), Christopher, Jacob and Adam, one great granddaughter Alexis, brother Robert (Kay) and sisters Sally and Catherine (Don).
Roger enlisted in the USMC in November 1951 and proudly served in Korea and the USMC Reserves.
After his military service, he spent 42 years in commercial ceramic tile and marble construction where he worked on several unique projects across the country. He was a 55-year union member in the tile and marble trade. Roger raised his family in Buffalo, NY and retired to Wilmington in 1997.
Roger was a telescope maker and master woodworker. He loved woodworking and made many fine pieces of furniture and other items for his family and friends. He also truly enjoyed working at Harbor United Methodist Church on all God-driven tasks.
In addition to his woodworking, he loved astronomy, traveling, camping and square dancing. He was an avid fan of football and hockey. Roger had a great sense of humor that will be missed, since it always kept you on your toes.
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Harbor United Methodist Church in Wilmington, NC.
