Obituary

Rosa Mae Hewitt, age 91, of Currie entered her eternal rest on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at Silver Stream Health & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born February 13, 1921 in Pender County, the daughter of the late Edgar Roscoe and Maybelle Peterson Malpass. Rosa Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Vance Vernon in 1953, husband, Marvin Rivenbark in 1988 and husband, Robert Hewitt, Sr. in 1998. Also remembered are sisters, Frances Rowe, Edith Thigpen Holt, and Mabel Moore; and brothers, Marion Malpass, E. R. Malpass and Robert Malpass, all who preceded Rosa Mae in death.

Rosa Mae leaves behind to cherish her memory her son, Marion V. Vernon of Winnabow; grandsons, Charles Vernon (Terry) and Stephen Vernon both of Leland; great grandchildren, Charles, Jr., William, Nicholas and Katie Vernon; sister, Mary Ruth Fitzgibbons of French Lick, IN; and many nieces and nephews.

Rosa Mae was a faithful member of Riley's Creek Baptist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the Confederacy. She contributed much of her time to research in genealogy and local history which she thoroughly enjoyed and willingly shared. In the 1950's and 60's Rosa Mae was a noted seamstress in Wilmington. Later she was employed for a number of years with Babcock & Wilcox Company. Rosa Mae was active in Pender County Home Extension Service, teaching many classes.

Rosa Mae was a devoted mother and the best grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She loved and served the Lord all of her life. To the family she nurtured and those who counted her as a friend, Rosa Mae was greatly admired for her creative talents, energy, enthusiasm, sense of humor and bright smile. Cherished memories of Rosa Mae will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 8, 2012 at Riley's Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Herchenhahn officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

The family received friends at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at the church until hour of the service.
