Roy Dean Kent, 72, passed away on June 18, 2026.

Born on April 1, 1954, Dean was the son of the late Hazel Glover. Dean grew up in Shelby, NC, with a strong work ethic, a kind heart, and a deep appreciation for family that remained with him throughout his life. He retired to North Myrtle Beach, SC.

Dean was a graduate of Appalachian State University and was employed by CA Short for over 30 years in Shelby, where he was respected for his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to his work.

Above all else, Dean treasured his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lania Plummer Kent, whose love and companionship enriched his life. He was a devoted father to Dean Brown (Jada) of Pinehurst and Lance Brown (Jennifer) of Salisbury. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Larry Plummer and Chris Plummer of Swannanoa.

Known as Papa, Dean was a proud and loving grandfather to six grandchildren: Gracie, Lauren, Connor, Gage, Nicole, and Colton. He loved each of them dearly and found great joy in watching them grow and celebrating their accomplishments. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and the memories they shared will be cherished forever.

Dean also shared a special bond with his beloved Labradoodle, Arnie. The two were constant companions and one of Dean’s greatest joys was taking Arnie along for car rides. The two never met a stranger during their adventures which brought him happiness and reflected the warmth and loyalty that Dean valued so deeply.

Dean enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life. He loved playing golf and was an avid sports fan who rarely missed an opportunity to follow and cheer for his favorite team, the UNC Tarheels. His Christian faith was extremely important to him and served as a guiding force throughout his life, providing strength, comfort, and purpose.

Dean will be remembered for his gentle spirit, unwavering love for his family, and the kindness he showed to those around him. His presence brought comfort and strength to those who knew him, and his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
