Roy Mathews, age 85, of Hampstead NC, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on April 12, 2023.

He was born to the late Lawrence H. Mathews and Elizabeth Mathews of Wilmington, NC in 1937.

After retiring from DuPont, he embarked on a successful building contracting career that spanned more than four decades.

Roy is survived by his loving wife, Patsy Mathews; son, Jerry Ellis (Wendy W. Ellis) of Wilmington, NC; daughters, Wendy R. Ellis of Hampstead, NC and Joya E. Teter (Douglas Teter) of Lakeland, FL; grandsons, Zachary Teter, Brady Ellis, Deacon Teter, and Matthew Teter; granddaughter, Lane Ellis; sisters, Shirley Bradshaw of Wilmington, NC and Susan Rose of Wilmington, NC; and brother, Jerry Mathews (Jane Mathews) of Wilmington, NC.

In addition to his parents, Roy is preceded in death by his brothers, Lawrence Mathews, Jr. and Bobby Mathews.

As a retired Lt. Colonel in the United States military, he will be laid to rest at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors at a later date. A celebration of life will be taking place Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 11:00am at Blakes Chapel, 88 Blakes Chapel Road, Hampstead, NC 28443.
