Obituary

Ruby Henderson Matthews, age 85, of Teachey left this earthly life for her eternal rest on Saturday, April 1, 2017 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on November 21, 1931 in Duplin County and was the daughter of the late Gaylor and Viola Henderson. She was predeceased by her husband and father of her children, Leo Carr Matthews and by her late husband, William Carl Powell; her son, Johnnie Lee Matthews and 6 siblings.

Ruby was a dedicated member of Corinth Baptist Church.

Surviving to cherish her memory is her devoted children, Dianne Matthews of Wilmington, Kay M. Johnson and husband, Delana of Teachey and Bill Matthews and wife, Gina of Teachey; grandchildren, Edwin Johnson, Steven Johnson, Brittney Knowles and Morgan Murray; great grandchildren, Chancey Johnson, Tucker Johnson, Sawyer Johnson, Saragrace Johnson, Zachary Johnson, Carrlee Jack Murray, Skylar Murray and Fin Knowles and numerous nieces, nephews and friends who loved Ruby dearly and was loved by her in return.

Ruby was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend who loved her family dearly. She found great joy in the simplest of things, but her greatest joy was family. Ruby lived her life based on Christian principles and instilled Christian values in her children and grandchildren. She was a great cook who shared her labor of love with many in the community. She enjoyed working in her yard and in the garden. With a joyful spirit Ruby filled her home with love and welcomed all who entered. She was a good neighbor, good friend and was loved by all who knew her. Ruby's family is grateful to God for her life and consider themselves to be very blessed to have had such a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend.

Funeral service will be at 2:00pm on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Wallace Chapel with the Reverend Larry King and the Reverend Phil Eakins officiating.

Burial will follow in Rockfish Memorial Cemetery, Wallace.

Casketbearers will be Chancey Johnson, Edwin Johnson, Steven Johnson, David Knowles, Bill Matthews and Eric Murray.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00pm, one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
