Russell Edwin Taylor, age 81, of Burgaw, died Sunday, September 5, 2010 at his residence.
He was born April 16, 1929 in Lumberton, the son of the late Willie Jenkins Taylor and Naomi Musselwhite Taylor. Also remembered are his devoted wife, Eunice Rivenbark Taylor and his brother, Kenneth Taylor.
Surviving are his daughter, Sherry Sutton (Tony) of Willard; son, Michael Taylor (Lynn) of Atkinson; grandchildren, Keith Sutton (Kayla) of Richlands, Kari Sutton and Jeremy Sutton both of Willard, Blake Taylor and Cassie Taylor both of Atkinson; great grandchildren, Cole, Caleb, Carter and Arissa; brother, W.J. Taylor, Jr. of Chesapeake, Virginia; sisters, Flora T. Ives of Burgaw and Nancy T. Elmore of Albany, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Taylor served his county honorably in the US Army Air Corps and was a member of Mt. Holly Baptist Church.
Russell loved his family and was one of the most caring, sharing and giving individuals in the Burgaw Community. For over 20 years he was a volunteer at Guardian Care Nursing Home in Burgaw and was the proud recipient of the Volunteer Service Award from Gov. Jim Hunt for volunteering more than 1000 hours. With a witty sense of humor Russell always had a humorous reply to most any situation. Russell spent his life uplifting and serving others. Well done Thy good and faithful servant, enter into your rest.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Mt. Holly Baptist Church with the Rev. David Brisson and the Rev. Hal Bilbo officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Holly Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors accorded by American Legion Post 10 Honor Guard.
Casketbearers will be Joe Bryant Newkirk, Tommy Ives, Jamie Ives, Jeremy Sutton, Jamie Taylor, John Garrett and Donald Croom.
The family will receive friends 6 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Burgaw.
