Obituary

Sarah Griffin Harvell of Penderlea, N.C. passed away July 25, 2022 at the age of 92 at Pender Memorial Hospital.  The family would like to thank the staff for the kind and compassionate care given to her.  A memorial service will be planned at a later date.

She was born on February 3, 1930 in Snowhill, Greene County, NC to William Alfred Griffin and Grace Witherington Griffin. She grew up in Penderlea (her family was one of the first settlers in the new project started by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt) where she met and married her late husband Ransom Carr Harvell. She was a homemaker, a good mother and grandmother and friend to many in her community. She worked as a ward clerk at Pender Memorial Hospital for 25 years where she retired at the age of 75. She especially enjoyed her Setback Card Playing Ladies on Mondays, faithfully attending her church, Potts Memorial Presbyterian, for as long as her health permitted where she was a charter member and her standing Friday morning hair appointments at Chenel's Salon in Wallace which she rarely missed well through her late 80s.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is also preceded in death by her son, Robert Alfred (Al) Harvell, sister Dorothy Atkinson and brother Franklin Delano Griffin.

She is survived by her two loving daughters, Patricia H. Boykin and Wanda H. Marks, Wanda's husband Chris Marks (who Sarah loved and considered to be a very good son).  Two grandchildren, Lea Ann Cook and husband Larry R. Cook and Daniel Carr Boykin and wife Susan, three great grandchildren, Skyler Boykin, Savannah Boykin and Sarah Carr Henley Cook, who brought much joy into her life.  In addition are two step great grandchildren, Jackson Simpson and Cameron Simpson.  Sarah was one of eight children. She is also survived by her sisters Eleanor King, Kay Kenan, Barbara Bradshaw (and husband Glenn), Jo Wilson and Martha Cabral.  There are also numerous nieces and nephews who loved their Aunt Sarah dearly.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Sarah's memory to Potts Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund at 2453 Crooked Run Road, Willard, NC 28478.
