Shirley Lanier Blackburn, 76, of Burgaw passed peacefully from her earthly life to her eternal rest on Friday, June 15, 2012 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center with family by her bedside.
She was born February 7, 1936 in Pender County, the daughter of the late Roy and Mary Ethel Jones Lanier. Also remembered are her daughter, Shiela Cowan and brother, Roy Douglas Lanier.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 58 years, Ivey James Blackburn, Sr.; daughter, Brenda Blackburn Wurtz of Maxton; sons, Ivey James "Jimmy" Blackburn, Jr. (Nancy) of Burgaw and Dean Blackburn (Patience) of Monks Corner, SC; grandchildren, Tony Horne, Megan Shoecraft, Lisa Day (Jordan), Clint Blackburn, Vanessa Lowery (Chris), Kim Blackburn, Gatlin Blackburn, Samuel Cowan, Jackson Blackburn and Emma Blackburn; great grandchildren, Anthony Lowery, Lauren Thornton, Dustin Day, Connor Beringer and Landon Beringer; brother, Wayne Lanier (Jo) of Burgaw; sisters, Faye Gardner (Robert) of Raleigh, Lois Huffman of Burlington and Hazel Smith (Jim) of Durham; many nieces and nephews.
To know Shirley was to love her. She was a lady in every sense of the word. She was a loving wife and devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was the glue and the anchor that held her family together. Shirley was a faithful member of Jordan's Chapel United Methodist where she served the Lord for many years. Everyone who knew Shirley knew that she was a dedicated Christian and her life was an example to everyone around her. She was loved and will be greatly missed.
Memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 in the original Jordan's Chapel United Methodist Church Sanctuary where she and Ivey were married 58 years ago. Pastor John Barnes and Pastor John Fedoronko will officiate.
The family will receive friends 6 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Burgaw.
Memorial gifts may be given to Jordan's Chapel United Methodist Church, 4670 Stag Park Rd, Burgaw, NC 28425.
