Sophie Wells, 90, of Watha, passed away peacefully to her heavenly home on August 18, 2026 at her home with her family by her bedside.
She was born on October 10, 1935, the daughter of the late Donnie and Exie Owens of Pender County. She was predeceased by her precious husband, JP Wells of 67 years at the time of his passing. She has two sisters, Gertie Wells of Wallace, NC and Linda Allen of Newport News, Virginia; and brother Alfred Owens of Watha, NC who preceded Sophie in death. She has a special “sister/aunt”, Barbara Honeycutt of Watha, NC, who always held a special place in her life.
Sophie is survived by her daughters Joan Johnson (Bob, deceased), Glenda Knowles (David), and Roxane Denny(Danny); sons Jeffrey Wells (Angela) and Bryan Wells (Tina); grandchildren James Johnson, Brian Johnson, Shawn Knowles (Meredith), Lisa Jones (Ashley), Phillip Knowles (Janessa), Jacob Denny (Lauren), Josh Denny (Amber), Jeremy Wells (Stacy), Ashley Reynolds (Ryan), Amanda Scott (Josh), Alexa Bieber (Zach) and Brittney Brown (Brandon); and 21 great grandchildren.
Sophie was a devoted wife and mother. Her life centered around God and her family. She was kind and loving and happiest when she was doing for others. She took great care of her family and was a wonderful homemaker — sewing her own clothes, filling the freezer with fresh food from their garden, making mouthwatering homemade biscuits and delicious meals every day, and baking delicious desserts to share with others. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and crafting, and she enjoyed gifting away her homemade treasures to others. After raising five children, she went to work at Walmart for 20 years and worked as department manager of crafts and fabrics. She enjoyed helping others with their projects as much as she enjoyed doing it herself.
Sophie will be greatly missed by her family and friends. In the words of Sophie, she would often say, “I have no more words.”
Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 21, 2026 at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with Rev. David Knowles conducting the service. The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m., one hour prior to funeral service.
Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Park.
The family wishes to thank Lower Cape Fear Hospice staff for their wonderful care, support, and comfort to Sophie and her family in the weeks preceding her death. They also wish to give a special thank you to Sarah Simpson, of Meals on Wheels, for the loving kindness she gave to Sophie on each of her daily stops.
