Obituary


Stephen "Steve" Guilford Horrell, age 57, of Rocky Point passed away peacefully on Friday, December 25, 2009 at his home with his wife and daughters at his side.

He was born November 25, 1952 in Wilmington to Lucille Horrell Shepard and the late Steve A. Horrell.

Steve is survived by his wife, Cindy Horrell and their daughters, Anna H. Squires (Michael) of Ivanhoe, Grace E. Horrell of Wilmington and Anne B. Baker (Brad) of Rocky Point; his mother and step-father, Rev. Willie and Lucille Horrell Shepard of Wilmington; grandchildren, Jackson H. Squires, Adrienne G. Squires and Olivia A. Baker; and sisters, Debbie H. Fletcher of Utah and Sheila H. Ball (Larry) of Wilmington.

Steve served his country honorably in the US Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a graduate of the Army-Navy School of Music, Little Creek, VA, and was attached to the 82nd AirBorne Division Band at Ft. Bragg playing the trumpet and guitar. With a love of music and a God given talent, he was a renowned musician playing in numerous bands. Steve was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and was a member of the Winter Park Baptist Church Praise Band.

Prior to Steve's battle with cancer he was employed with International Paper Company and also held a 2nd degree black belt in Martial Arts.

Steve loved his family more than words can express and he was truly a loyal and faithful friend to many. His laughter, love and sharing will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with The Rev. Ted McConnell officiating.

There will be a private burial.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest in honor and memory of Steve that memorial gifts be given to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 16 N. 16th St., Wilmington, NC 28401, Winter Park Baptist Church, 4700 Wrightsville Ave, Wilmington, NC 28403 or to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401.
