Susan Grossnickle Barnhill, 76, passed from her earthly life Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
She was born July 13, 1945 in Detroit, MI, the daughter of Robert James Grossnickle and Mabel Alger Grossnickle. In addition to her parents, Susan was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Helen Vincent, Frances Nixon, and Jane M. Guptil; and brothers, James Robert Grossnickle and Harold Neil Grossnickle.
Susan is survived by her husband of 58 years, John D. Barnhill; daughters, Susan E. Barnhill (Tim) and Katherine Barnhill Weaver (Hobie); son, John D. Barnhill, Jr.; grandchildren, Kristin Knowles, Christopher Barnhill (Heather), John Taylor Laney (Rebecca), Haleigh Weaver, Cori Horton, and Michael Horton; great grandchildren, Landon Burgamey, Cayden Barnhill, Hendrix Hanes, Kyler Barnhill, John Wyatt Barnhill and Kayden Carty; brother, Paul Edwin Grossnickle; and many extended family and friends.
Susan was a member of Riley's Creek Baptist Church. Many children benefited from the hours that Susan spent as a Title I Tutor/teacher in the Pender County School System where she retired after many years of teaching.
Susan primary passions in life were her Christian faith, her loving family, the many students she taught, and her cherished friends. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. Susan was a marvelous cook and homemaker, creating a home filled with sunshine and goodness. She was an avid gardener as each year she grew a bountiful vegetable garden. Susan will be remembered for her sweet, sweet spirit and will be greatly missed.
Funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 21, 2021 at Riley's Creek Baptist Church with Pastor Merrell McKoy conducting the service. Burial will follow in Riley's Creek Memorial Cemetery.
The family will visit with friends at the cemetery following the committal service.
