Obituary

Terry "Steppie" Beers left us to have a beer with his late sister, Patricia Beers Burke (Robert), on May 5th, 2024. Signing off on life, in his words, "I am not here for a long time, I am here for a good time". A good time and a full life, he definitely had.

God thankfully broke the mold after Terry was born to the late Brendan Beers and Harriet Mosely Beers on October, 24th, 1954 in Delaware county, PA. He grew up most of his life in Deptford, NJ. His siblings looked up to the prankster, known as Big Red, growing up. Terry was larger than life and excelled at many things.

Terry's love of sports was influenced by his father, Brendan. In his youth Terry was a standout for Oak Valley Athletic Association Baseball league in the summer, and the Hawks youth football and St Margaret Football organization. His winter consisted of playing basketball for St. Margarets CYO.

Terry then moved on to Deptford High and was #66 as a tenacious middle linebacker and guard for the Fighting Spartans. He was a three-time letter winner and received numerous accolades for his play. His best game was the last game of his Senior year when winless Deptford beat their archrival undefeated West Deptford. In typical Terry Beers fashion with the help of his lifelong friend, Guy Varquez, who taped a written message on his helmet "I hate West Deptford So Do Something About it!". His play in that game earned him the South Jersey player of the Week.

Terry's baseball career at Deptford saw him start as a catcher in every varsity game for all four years and batted over .300 for his career. To this day he is recognized as one of best catchers ever to don the black and gold. He was also a fourth-degree black belt in Tang soon do and regularly placed in tournaments, including Madison Square Garden. Later in life he would use this to give a perfect roundhouse kick to an inch of any boy's head that wanted to date his step daughters.

Terry worked at Glassboro Lumber most of his adult life and enjoyed showing his grandchildren how to operate the forklift. Terry and Debi never met a stranger, and spent all of their time together, at concerts, bars, and even camping in their own backyard. His lifelong love for golf gave him numerous years of joy and friendships. So much so, the day after they married in 1996, they drove to the Wildwood Golf tournament, and Debi caddied for him on their honeymoon. Talk about love. Sand Key FL became their favorite vacation spot, and they spent over 10 years going there, making lots of memories and lifelong friendships. After retirement he moved to Wilmington, NC to be with his step daughters and grandkids. He was fortunate to move onto the 13th hole at Beau Rivage Golf and Resort, where he continued to enjoy his favorite hobby. He spent the last 8 years happily enjoying the beach, bars, boating, and brunch with his family.

"Steppie" leaves behind his true love of over 28 years, Debi Moser Beers, two step-daughters he considered his own, Cheryl Backensto Rutter, Kristen Backensto Atoigue (Jason), and four grandchildren he loved more than anything, Joshua Atoigue, Emma Atoigue, John Paul Rutter, Arianna Rutter, and best friend for life, Tully, his beloved dog.

Terry is survived by his brothers & sister: Kevin Beers (Maria), Catherine Aimino (Michael), Michael Beers (Pamela). Nephews & Niece: Jason Beers (Ishani), Goddaughter Kimberly Castano (Ian), Michael Aimino III, Conor Beers, Sean Beers, Great Nephew Dorian Castano, Great Niece Ivy Faye Castano. Cousins: Margaret Mary Coley, Meg Coley (Bev), Michele Cosgrove (Joseph).

Terry despised formality and stuffiness. We will celebrate his life on Sunday, May 19th, 2024 on the Veranda at Beau Rivage Golf & Resort from 1pm to 4pm. We will have a "party" Steppie style on June 29th, 2024 at Colonial Cafe in West Deptford, NJ. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Love is Bald (a NC local cancer charity) in Terry's name. www.loveisbald.org, mail a check, venmo @loveisbald, or Mulligan Animal Rescue www.mulligananimalrescue.com.
