Terrance "Terry"
Benjey
Feb 24, 1944 — Jun 17, 2013
Terrance Edward Benjey passed away Monday, June 17, 2013 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Terry was born Feb. 24, 1944 in Oak Park, Illinois to Virginia (Madiol) Benjey and Stephen Leon Benjey, both deceased.
He graduated in 1962 from Bethalto Civic Memorial High School, in Bethalto, Il, and married Rita (Kelly) Benjey on March 17, 1967 in Wilmington.
Terry is survived by his wife, seven brothers, Thomas (Ann) Benjey of Carlisle, PA, Daniel (Betty) Benjey of Alton, Todd (Ana) Benjey, Champaign, Donald Benjey of Wilsonville, Shawn Benjey of Wilsonville, Stephen Benjey of Lititz, PA, and Grant Benjey of Wilsonville; two sisters, Kathleen (Dale) Boyer of Winter Haven, FL and Beth (Ralph) Gallegos of Rio Rancho, NM; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
His love of bicycling began in childhood. At age 15, he applied the skills he developed while repairing bicycles for the neighborhood in his parent's basement, with the opening of the Bike Shop, a storefront at 110 Mill Road in Bethalto, Il in July 1961.
Terry entered basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX on July 11, 1962, where he was trained in the computer technology he used the rest of his military career at the Pentagon. After being honorably discharged, he moved to Wilmington, North Carolina to set up the first computer system at James Walker Memorial Hospital where he met his future bride Rita Kelly.
When James Walker Hospital closed down, the couple transferred to the New Hanover Medical Center, where Terry continued to oversee the computer department while Rita became Director of Admissions. He was later employed with National Data Processing and North Carolina State Port Authority before establishing T.E. Benjey Company, a consulting firm that helped Wilmington's small businesses with their computer needs.
For 40 years Terry had been an active and vibrant citizen in the Wilmington community. He was one of the founding members of the Cape Fear Cycling Club, and was appointed by Governor James Hunt to the Inaugural NCDOT Bicycle Advisory Committee in 1978, the period that the North Carolina Bicycle routes were laid out.
