Velma Horne Jenkins, 97, of Wallace, North Carolina went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, July 26, 2023.

She was born on March 17, 1926, in the Cypress Creek community and moved to Wallace in her twenties. She was the daughter of the late Alfred Dunn and Mame Batchelor Horne.  Velma was also preceded in death by her husband, Jesse J. Jenkins; her sisters Margaret Roberts and Madeline Slater and brother, Neil Horne.

Velma was a life-long member of First Baptist Church of Wallace where she was a very involved as long as her health permitted.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her children, Larry Jenkins and wife Cathy of Dallas, NC, Reverend Stan Jenkins and wife Melody of Oxford, NC and Tony Jenkins and wife Nancy of Wallace; grandchildren, Beth Jenkins Callahan and husband Neil, Wendy Jenkins Cox and husband Erik, Emory Miller, and Maggie Marsh; great grandson, Will Jordan and numerous extended family and friends that loved Velma dearly.

Velma was a loving mother and caring grandmother who loved her family with all her heart.  She was very proud of her 'boys' and always there for them.  She was a simple lady full of beauty and grace and an instrument of God's love.  Velma had an in-home daycare and was a vital part of many children's lives throughout the years. She was a diligent homemaker and with a joyful spirit she filled her home with love and welcomed all who entered. With a love for cooking, Velma enjoyed sharing with others.  Most days if she was not in the kitchen she could be found working in her yard.  Velma will surely be missed but treasured memories of her will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 28, 2023, at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Wallace Chapel with Pastor Chris Jarman officiating.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will follow the service in Rockfish Memorial Cemetery in Wallace.

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be given to Wallace Christian Academy, c/o Poston Baptist Church, 4121 S NC Hwy 11, Wallace, NC  28466.
