Walter Joseph Franzen, age 76, of Wilmington, NC passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2022.

He was born on May 13, 1946 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Franz Walter Franzen and Margaret Ward Franzen.

Walter was a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War. After his service, he earned a bachelor's degree and became a Certified Public Accountant. During 2005 and 2010, Walter worked for the government as a forensic auditor in Iraq. He won several awards and honors during his service there. Walter did mission work through Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and Myrtle Grove Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of Pine Valley United Methodist Church. Walter loved fishing and the ocean. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

Walter is survived by his wife, Donna Kay Franzen; son, Joshua Franzen; daughter, Erinn McDowell; step-daughter, Tammie Tart (Marcus); brother-in-law, Dennis O'Kola; and grandchildren, Shea McDowell, Mallorie Tart, and Blayne Tart.

In addition to his parents, Walter was also preceded in death by his sisters, Theresa Franzen and Edith O'Kola; and brother, John Franzen.

The family would like to thank the staff at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, Griswold Home Care of Wilmington and the many other doctors and nurses for the excellent care they provided.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, July 24, 2022 at Pine Valley United Methodist Church in Wilmington at 4pm with Reverend Jimmy Johnson and Pastor Kim Collins officiating and the U.S. Army performing military honors.
