Walter Cornelious Phipps, 69, passed from his earthly life Thursday, August 13, 2026. He was born June 18, 1957 in Wilmington, the son of Johnnie C. Phipps and Maggie Earlene Zurcher Phipps. In addition to his parents Walter was preceded in death by his son, Paul Phipps.

He is survived by his wife, Janet Dexter Phipps; sons, James Phipps (Nichole) and James Barbee (Mitzi); daughter, Caitlin Barbee; grandson, Jack Dexter and many additional grandchildren; brother, George Phipps; and many extended family and friends.

A service to celebrate Walter’s life will be 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service.
