Obituary

Walter W. Tompkins, 76, of Rocky Point passed peacefully from his earthly life on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center in Wilmington.

He was born January 21, 1936 in Pender County and was the son of the late James and Lena Smith Tompkins.

Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Berta Mae Harts Tompkins; sons, Walter Clifton Tompkins (Terri) of Willard and James Curtis Tompkins of Wilmington; grandchildren, Amy Cameron (Steven) and Stacy Tompkins; four great grandchildren; brother, Robert A. "Rock" Tompkins of Rocky Point; and sisters, Teresa Downey (Tom) of Georgia and Dorothy Maxwell of Arkansas; and several nieces, nephews and extended family.

Walter was a member of Pike Rocky Point Presbyterian Church. For many years he was employed with Ideal Cement Company.

Walter loved his family and was a great husband, daddy, granddaddy, brother and friend. His love of children was evidenced by the fact that they all affectionately called him "Pop" and that he taught many children how to swim in his beloved river at his home. Walter loved all of God's nature and as long as his health permitted he enjoyed hunting, fishing and just sitting down at the river's edge for a quiet afternoon. He enjoyed people in small numbers and both friends and family loved his dry wit sense of humor. His steadfast faith in the Lord, his caring manner and his warm heart will always be cherished.

Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at Pike Rocky Point Presbyterian Church with the Rev. C. J. Young-Thompson officiating. A time of fellowship will follow at the Tompkins' home.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be given to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physician's Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401.
