Obituary

Warren Hoyle Young, Jr., aged 76, died on August 22, 2016 at Texas Health Hospital in Fort Worth, TX surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his wife and best friend of 53 years, Byrd Austin Satterfield Young, who died at their home in Colleyville, TX on July 19, 2016.

Warren was born October 15, 1939 in Burgaw, NC the son of Dr. Warren Hoyle Young, DDS and Mattie Kate Thomas Young, teacher. Warren Sr. was Pender County's first dentist and an early mayor of Burgaw. Warren Jr. graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Duke University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1961.

Byrd was born on August 22, 1939 in Timberlake, North Carolina the daughter of Byrd Isaac Satterfield, farmer, lawyer and NC State House of Representatives legislator, and Sarah Winnie Jones Satterfield, teacher. Byrd graduated from Duke University in 1961 with a degree in Public Affairs.Warren and Byrd met at Duke University and were married at Duke Chapel in 1962. They started their married life while Warren received his Masters and PhD at NC State University in Raleigh, NC, followed by his employment at NASA's Langley Research Center, VA in helicopter aeronautical research. His colleagues awarded him the Order of the Half Ace for the many helicopter models he destroyed in wind-tunnel research. After leaving her career as a civil servant to raise her children, Byrd received a Master's in Education from Old Dominion University while teaching at Gloucester Middle School.


Warren and Byrd's three children, Warren Hoyle Young III, Kathryn Byrd Young, and Jessica Wynne Young Smith, were raised in Gloucester, Virginia before moving to Texas in 1983, where Warren joined Bell Helicopter Textron to lead their research team. Warren also served as president of the American Helicopter Society's Southwest Chapter. Warren continued his passion for technology after his retirement in 2006 by acting as a consultant to his daughter Jessica's intellectual property practice. Byrd's move to Texas inspired a second career in real estate and property management. After retiring, she helped raise her grandchildren.Warren and Byrd are survived by their three children; four grandchildren, Austin Hoyle Young, Ethan David Young, Madeline Kate Young, and Sarah Wynne Smith; one great-granddaughter Tessa Kate Herrera; sisters Mary Susan Bruttomesso, Mary Emily Blackburn, and Winnie Davis Cheney; and their many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Family services are Saturday, October 29th at Burgaw Cemetery followed by a reception at Burgaw United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Donations may be made to their hometown churches: Burgaw UMC, P. O. Box 26, Burgaw, NC 28425 or Mount Zion UMC in Hurdle Mills, NC.
