William L. Stines, of Wilmington, went home to be with the Lord on March 11, 2017. He was born in Walnut NC on July 23, 1930, to the late Berry and Lina Stines.
He served in the US Air Force and retired from the National Weather Service in 1984. After retiring, he volunteered with the National Park Service, Port Authority Seaman Center, and the Baptist Men's Ministry. He helped coordinate mission trips to West Virginia which included building churches and collecting and distributing food and clothing for the poverty-stricken area around Beckley. He was a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church. William was very devoted to his church, his family, and serving his Lord. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
William was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Honeycutt, of the home; two daughters, Wynelle Kovach (Dennis) of Wilmington, NC and Terena Burke (Tracy) of Valley, AL; four grandchildren, Justin Fulton-Kovach (Maggie) of Brooklyn, NY, Jessica Kovach of Carrboro, NC, Abby Luke (Matthew) of Wilmington, NC, and Steven Burke (Crystal) of Valley, AL; two great-granddaughters, Hallie Nicole Luke of Wilmington, NC and Emma Neva Burke of Valley, AL; one brother, Edwin Stines (Connie) of Madison, NC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home on Oleander Drive in Wilmington, NC, Tuesday March 14, 2017, with visitation at 10am and memorial service at 11am. Burial will take place Thursday March 16, 2017 in Station Cemetery, Marshall, NC. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial gifts be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice; 1406 Physicians Dr. Wilmington, NC 28401
