Willie Alvin Atkinson, 68, of Currie, North Carolina passed away on May 14, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.
Born to Hugh and Hilda Atkinson, Willie lived a full and spirited life and had a generous heart. A lifelong farmer, he poured his energy and passion into the land, cultivating not only crops but a legacy of perseverance and humor.
Willie shared 41 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Gayle, and together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and hard work. He was the proud father of three children, Melissa, Joseph, and Jonathan, and the adoring grandfather to four grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life.
Known for his boundless energy and warm presence, Willie never hesitated to lend a helping hand. Willie had a quick wit, a sharp mind, and a storyteller's charm. He had a remarkable ability to make people laugh and feel at ease. His intelligence and humor left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gayle; his children, Melissa Atkinson Baird (Jones), Joseph Atkinson, Jonathan Atkinson (Catrina); grandchildren, Jasper Baird, Charlotte Baird, Jesse Baird, Mason Atkinson; his brother Hugh Atkinson Jr. (Jackie), sister Donna Sharp (David), and many cherished nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Hilda Atkinson; his brother, Gene Atkinson; and niece, Stephanie Sharp.
Willie will be remembered for his unwavering spirit, his love of the land, and his ability to bring a smile no matter the situation.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2025 at Long Creek Baptist Church with Rev. William Moore conducting the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Atkinson residence.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Long Creek Baptist Church, C/O Kay Frazier, 12710 US Hwy 421, Burgaw, NC 28425.
